safe shader materials at one point and force all nodes (except character skin) to use those. Reusing shaders increase performance, also it's easier to find, reuse and edit them this way. Reusing materials and/or shaders increase render performance!! make materials flat and per vertex to let them look more comic style and easier to calculate. Probably learn more about lightning and shader scripting first.
