It seems there lacks an important parameter InputEncoding in the Engine 
Properties
XUL window. And the Engine Properties window looks like all fields are
non-editionable, maybe a better CSS is needed.

Ah, you're certainly right about the missing encoding.

However the disabled fields are disabled for a reason: these changes can't be 
saved
for default engines in Firefox 3. They are enabled for engines that were 
manually
installed and in the Firefox 3.5 Betas.
