would it be interesting having a direct SQL access to the database? one where you could write SELECT queries and have complete control of them?
apart from forcing the user to learn some SQL, it would allow them to generate aggregate data for reports.
things like: overview of all species with the amount of accessions and plants, sorted by genus.

I'd say yes, as an option it could be handy at times. Especially if there was a way to save the queries for reuse.
