Android KitKat - when I click on the message it doesn't go to the default app

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Receive SMS
2. Tap the message on the notification
3. Opens Messaging instead of Hangouts (which is the default)

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Open Hangouts SMS but it goes to the "Messagin" app

What version of the product are you using?
Latest

Which device and Android version are you experiencing this issue on?
Nexus 4 with Kit kat 4.4

Are you using a custom launcher or ROM? If so, which one? Note that custom
launchers and ROMs are not supported.
All default and stock

Please provide any additional information below.

Also, when using stock 4.4 rom with Nexus 5, where there is no Messaging app, 
clicking the notification leads to nothing. The action is not followed by the 
launch of Hangouts app.
