When imputing an item, its moved to the input slot to the internal storage and then to the output slot, when its moved to the output slot, this clears the internal storage stack, allowing another item to be stored in its place. This only stops when the output slot's stack is full and items stay in the internal storage.
When automation (pipes) route to the chest, no consideration is made for the item(s) already stored in the chest. This allows un-store-able items to pile up in the input slot and prevent valid items from being input into the chest's storage
The automation representation of the chest can only count the 3 slots of items and can't access the full stored amount, this prevents you from say interfacing the chest with ae2
