Awesome idea that has a lot potential to assist the GF community. So much opportunity and dependent on goal, scope and resources. Will you be pulling the meta data from the websites? You could show pricing (for decision making), if in stock (to buy locally)...etc Product listing (100 % GF facility, dedicated production lines, shared equipment, tested...etc to help with decision making). How about a website community dashboard. You could show most searched, linked items (and maybe allow ratings). New users can see what the GF community is using. Will users have accounts? This allows for additional features (wish lists, favorites,..etc). Keep eliciting the requirements from the end users (the GF community) and you should have a great product in the end that users will find valuable.
Love this idea. I'm on a local group called Twin Cities R.O.C.K (Raising Our Celiac Kids is a national organization, this is the local group. You should join it.) I know fellow moms of kids with CD would use your site, but they would want to know a few things: 1. Certified GF? 2. By whom? 3. Produced in a dedicated GF facility. 4. Other allergens present? Dairy, nuts, soy, especially. It would be great to eventually expand to chain restaurants.
A word of warning: ingredients and factories change frequently. It's going to be very time consuming to maintain a website such as this. Make sure you run your idea past an attorney well-versed in food safety litigation. Having errors on a website like this leaves you open to getting sued. If you haven't heard of 'Gluten Dude' or 'Gluten Free Watchdog' you should Google them for more info on the frustration of mislabeling and the utter ignorance of food manufacturers. And the incompetence of the FDA to adequately regulate.
That would be fantastic... A mobile phone app that ties in would also be great imho... it's always at the grocery store that has me searching.
The ipiit app allows you to scan items with your phone. I love it, but it's not always comprehensive, but it does suggest alternative products if you scan something that isn't gluten free
This would be awesome! Maybe it could tell you what the prices are/if itβs on sale? I live near several specialty stores that carry the same things but I noticed some big price differences between stores.
I concur! App, family size, coupons, links to places to buy online especially with free shipping!
It would be really great if you could filter the results by store, and then see a list (organized by category) of or search for items that store carries. That way you could reduce the number of places you'd have to shop to get everything you need.
Good Idea. I would include more things in top searches, and move the place to enter your email at the bottom not the top.
Add Luckyvitamin.com to your list of sources.
Make your search box bigger.
maybe as you go along have a section that's like "our favorites" and highlight things you particularly like eating. Could also link to other sites for recipies and things (obviously not the main goal of the site but is good in the long run).
Overall that's a great idea!
I haven't found new fig bars yet, my first choice turned out to be a claim without a cert. I had better luck though, searching for fig, than fig bar. Interestingly Figgy Bixby Bar didn't show up when I searched for 'fig bar' only when I searched for 'fig' and did NOT put a space after it. I see why you did it that way, I mean a lot of the time I tell google to search for '(space) fig(space)' but I wish I had a checkbox that allowed for partial word matches.
When I clicked "coffee" under the "popular searches" on the front page (great idea!), I got mostly things that were not actually coffee - coffee cake, coffee flavored snacks, etc. Presumably anyone clicking on coffee is really just looking for coffee, so I wonder if you could limit to just coffee here?
I'm wondering how you currently have it set up to sort search results? It may be useful in the future to allow viewers to choose to sort by relevance, sort by price, etc.
What about nuts? I'm having a hard time finding certified GF walnuts, and many are the bitter black ones. I only see pine nuts, but when I search for 'walnuts' then I find them.
i did a search for "lunch meat" & nothing came up, then i searched for "carl buddig" and a bunch of that brand's lunch meat popped up.
might need a lot more tedious work categorizing
One suggestion for down the road would be to somehow include an attribute for each product in the database to indicate whether it is a boxed mix (to use in cooking or baking the product at home) or a finished, baked product (a loaf of bread) that would could be queried or searched as one criteria. Having to manually search the thousands of products to find a donut or cinnamon roll that is already made is monstrously difficult.
