[3] Discuss security's progression #11746

I dislike how quickly that security can gain access to extremely large numbers of weapons, particularly through printed research guns. I would like it if all guns were obtained only through cargo and that researchs can be made capable of unlocking cargo items.

As part of this, it may be fair that the lathe be moved back to the security office but I don't mind it staying with the warden since it can print ammo.

Antagonists can spend 45 minutes getting the gear that they need to act, only for security to shut it down in 20 seconds with their gear being so locked down that no antagonist can ever exploit it. I would like if this gear was more exploitable, and/or the gear progression had a bit more balance to it.

When it comes to Security, I think they should be 100% dependent on other departments. For example, if they want tending, they seek Medical. If they want meds (combat, healing or etc) they seek Chemistry. If they want mechs, they seek Robotics. If they want weapons, they seek the armour first and Cargo second. And so so on. This system has allowed regular department crew to have a method to access powerful equipment while also allowing the same regular departments to provide powerful equipment to Security.

Security should get next to nothing and instead have to rely on others to provide for them. Instead of making ammo and weapons printable, they should be hand crafted using a semi-complex system with predefined crafting recipes. Similar to mech assemblies.

Well, the usual line when gearing up is..

Use default equipment--> Go to Armory ---> Go to cargo if armory is empty or doesn't have the exact thing you need.

The only real reason you see mass-printing of guns is when explorers bring back the research disks, which is quite rare, so seeing the advanced e-guns and stuff like that rarely happen, the only thing i can think it's a ''free printable'' is the ion-carabine and the shield, which the later doesn't affect much and already comes with downsides

I did said back when the lathe got moved to the Warden office that while it may give more agency to HoS and Warden alongside controlling distribution of gear(good) it complicates antags acquiring stuff, which tbh it mostly affects the roboticists that seek guns/ammo for their rogue mechas.

You could make it like bringing the advanced e-gun disks unlock a particular crate from cargo but it would be kinda the same since... if Explo is doing their work, money will be available for the budget, you may delay it a bit and control the stocks but you usually see a BIG amount of weapons when it's extremely late-game and miners have done their job and we face a threat like a Blob that requires everyone to fight, that's mostly from experience.

It shouldn't just be Cargo. It should be every department. Even Engineering.

I don't think I've ever seen a HoS or Captain order something from me in Chemistry when facing a great threat. And VERY rarely when I'm in Robotics. Most of the time, I have to offer it to them. Why I don't know. Maybe they assume each department to be useless and in Cargo they can still make the orders themselves if Cargo isn't doing any good.

which tbh it mostly affects the roboticists that seek guns/ammo for their rogue mechas.

Good thing HoS has a spare techfab board. ;)

It isn't THAT bad. It is quite powerful, keep it risky.

Also, if the Explorers has done their job and they are sitting on a ton of cash. Security would DEFINITELY love to get their hands on those survival medipens.

I like the idea of a non-security role that handles the weapon crafting and manufactoring actually

Just when I thought I was out... They pull me back in...
