I suggest using 1.x-dev so that we don't need to update it each time we release a minor version. Having the dev alias being sorted as 1.99999-dev is OK IMO, as it still matches the semver operator ^ (and anyone wanting to restrict to patch-level changes should not receive the master branch, as we don't guarantee whether the next release will be a patch or minor one, it depends on the kind of changes being merged, and we won't think about updating the branch alias at the time a semver-minor change gets merged)
