6 years ago actually that is expected behaviour, and it is the same way it behaves on stock Pd.
The help file for [netsend] says:
The "-b" creation argument specifies binary messages instead, which appear in Pd as lists of numbers from 0 to 255 (You could use this to send OSC messages, for example.)
