I'm in to working on this over the weekend. Let's schedule a time on Sat or Sun to work on this and see what we can come up with.
Who else?!

Since we aren't going to use the CATlab machine forever, we got a dedicated box to run the software from. It needs Linux installed on it (cat lab machine runs Ubuntu 12.10). This would be good for someone (or some group of people) to do who has less CS experience to get more familiar with computers!

Quick question: Is 12.10 the best version to go for? Even though the Catlab machines are running 12.10, it's only going to be supported until next month. 12.04 will be supported until April 2017, so that might be the way to go.
Alternatively, 14.04 will be supported until 2019, but is still in beta and won't be released until next month.
Also, is there a monitor for the new machine?
you will need to borrow one temporarily - there is not one that we were provided with

I have one in the physics stock room that we can use temporarily. I'll put it in the lab tomorrow.

@vpascow would installing 12.10 for right now and then switching to 14.04 when it comes out next month be too much of a hassle?
thanks @hcrowl! @cjalloh, wanna knock this out tomorrow night? /whoever else wants to help?
@theDarkLard Yes! Lets's do it - and anyone feel free to join. Say ~ 7:30pm...?

@theDarkLard No, updating Ubuntu should be pretty straight forward
There's a monitor on the back lab bench for your use.
7:30 is perfect!

see #67
Fedora installed on machine. It is not yet clear if this is an improvement or worse than before, so leaving this issue open. May try what Hugh suggested (scientific linux) afterwards if Fedora doesnt work out..
this seems like it has become a duplicate issue of 67, since we now have an OS installed and working, and the problem that remains is with software. I'll close this issue for now.
