sewing stations encoding #1799

Closed thea-m closed 3 years ago

thea-m commented 3 years ago

Our multilayered guidelines have led to a small confusion regarding the correct encoding of sewing stations. In the guidelines (https://betamasaheft.eu/Guidelines/?id=bindingDescription), we find examples for the encoding in the form of

  1. <decoNote xml:id="b2">Two pairs of sewing stations.</decoNote> and
  2. <decoNote xml:id="b6" type="SewingStations">4</decoNote>.

Are both acceptable, is one really wrong? My understanding is that the second option is preferred. In any case, after clarfying this, I will add the clarification to the guidelines. Thank you!

@DenisNosnitsin1970 @DariaElagina @ElianaDalSasso

DariaElagina commented 3 years ago

Thank you, @thea-m ! This is really confusing, especially since we have to write down the number of stations and not pairs in the second example. Maybe from the point of view of information structure, a numerical value might be easier to parse than an alphabetic string. IMO, the best solution might be the following (which has to be checked against TEI): <decoNote xml:id="b6" type="SewingStations" n="4">Two pairs of sewing stations.</decoNote>

thea-m commented 3 years ago

(Edited in both comments an error copy pasted from the guidelines - they are two, not four pairs, thanks @ElianaDalSasso for pointing this out)

thea-m commented 3 years ago

@ElianaDalSasso has a weak connection and can't access GitHub, the following comments are from her:

The bare number is a valuable information (4 for example)

The information that they are sewn in pairs add something and permit to identify the sewing as Ethiopian

I would use both

thea-m commented 3 years ago

This proposal seems very reasonable to me (and as always, all existing records which contain only one of both options will remain fine). Now the question is whether this would best be done with repeating decoNotes as here:

<decoNote xml:id="b3" type="SewingStations">4</decoNote>
<decoNote xml:id="b4" type="SewingStations">Two pairs of sewing stations.</decoNote>

or as proposed by @DariaElagina in a more integrated way: <decoNote xml:id="b6" type="SewingStations" n="4">Two pairs of sewing stations.</decoNote>

@PietroLiuzzo , do you maybe have an opinion on this?

PietroLiuzzo commented 3 years ago

Re-reading the guidelines the use of @type="SewingStations" on a decoNote which does not contain a number seems to be an uncontrolled deviation. That is to say, a rule could be added to control this in the schema, and make sure that, as the guidelines state, this type of decoNote only contain a number, and the description of the sewing stations is provided "within a general decoNote" (see example 1 and just below example 2 in the GL page linked above).

I have generated with the following Xquery, the table below as a report on the situation

SHOr271a b5 Endbands Slit-braid endbands are present but they are very deteriorated only their extensions between the boards and the text block are well preserved. They are sewn to the codex with a thread of animal origin. The headband is sewn starting from the front cover while the tailband is sewn starting from the back cover. In the end the thread is knotted to the closest sewing station.
SHOr271a b6 SewingStations 4
SHOr271a b7 no @type The sewing is a chain-stitch on four sewing stations (two pairs). It is a variant of the pattern A defined by G. Bozzacchi. A thread of animal origin has been used.
SHOr400 b3 Boards Two wooden boards of the same species externally bevelled. In the central area of the lower board there is a hole where the ends of the sewing threads converge.
SHOr400 b6 SewingStations 4
SHOr400 b7 no @type The sewing is a chain-stitch on four sewing stations (two pairs). The sewing corresponds to the pattern A3 defined by G. Bozzacchi. A thread of animal origin has been used for the sewing.
SHOr401 b6 SewingStations 4
SHOr401 b7 no @type The sewing is a chain-stitch on four sewing stations (two pairs). The sewing is damaged and repaired so it's not possible to individuate the sewing pattern. The original sewing thread seemes to be of vegetal origin and waxed.
SHOr402 b3 Boards Two wooden boards of a dark reddish wood. Additional holes bigger than the ones used for the sewing are present: two in the inner edge (head and tale) of both boards and one in the outer lower corner of the upper board.
SHOr402 b6 SewingStations 4
SHOr402 b7 no @type The sewing is a chain-stitch on four sewing stations (two pairs). It is impossible to identify the pattern since the sewing is highly damaged. A thread of animal origin has been used.
SHOr403 b6 SewingStations 4
SHOr403 b7 no @type The sewing is a chain-stitch on four sewing stations (two pairs). The sewing is damaged and repaired with different kinds of threads so it is not possible to identify the original pattern. The original sewing thread seems to be of animal origin.
SHOr404 b6 SewingStations 4
SHOr404 b7 no @type The sewing is a chain-stitch on four sewing stations (two pairs). The sewing follows the pattern A defined by G. Bozzacchi. For each sewing station a thread of animal origin has been used.
SHOr405 b6 SewingStations 4
SHOr405 b7 no @type The sewing is a chain-stitch on four sewing stations (two pairs). The sewing is a variation of pattern A defined by G. Bozzacchi. For each sewing station a thread of animal origin has been used. Two ends of the thread are knotted along the centrefold of the first quire the other two pass each other and continue the sewing. The sewing is closed in the last quire knotting the threads together after they entered in the boards.
SHOr405 b9 Spine Small holes are present close to the head and tail of the quires probably remains of the tackets. Quires 1 10 and 11 have additional holes perhaps traces of a previous sewing or errors occurred during the preparation of the quires.
SHOr406 b5 Endbands Slit-braid endbands are present and sewn to the bookblock with a thread of animal origin. The headband is sewn starting from the upper board linking the braid to the first sewing station while the tailband is sewn starting from the lower board linking the braid to the last sewing station. The sewing ends inside the closest quire.
SHOr406 b6 SewingStations 4
SHOr406 b7 no @type The sewing is a chain-stitch on four sewing stations (two pairs). Since the sewing has been repaired is not possible to individuate the pattern.
SHOr407 b5 Endbands Slit-braid endbands are present and sewn to the bookblock with a thread of animal origin. The headband is sewn starting from the upper board linking the braid to the first sewing station while the tailband is sewn starting from the lower board linking the braid to the last sewing station.
SHOr407 b6 SewingStations 4
SHOr407 b7 no @type The sewing is a chain-stitch on four sewing stations (two pairs). The sewing is a variation of the pattern A3 defined by G. Bozzacchi. In the centrefold of the first quire for each pair of sewing station there is one long stitch. Two threads of animal origin are used.
SHOr407 b9 Spine Small holes close to the head and tail of the codex are visible in addition to those used for sewing the endbands.
SHOr408 b6 SewingStations 4
SHOr408 b7 no @type The sewing is a chain-stitch on four sewing stations (two pairs). The sewing follows the pattern A3 defined by G. Bozzacchi. For each pair of sewing station there is one long stitch along the centrefold of the first quire.
SHOr409 b6 SewingStations 4
SHOr409 b7 no @type The sewing is a chain-stitch on four sewing stations (two pairs). The sewing pattern is variation of the pattern A3 defined by G. Bozzacchi. Two threads of animal origin have been used. The sewing probably starts from the centrefold of the first quire it binds the boards and enters in the second quire continuing the sewing. The ends of the threads are knotted in the centrefold of the last quire.
SHOr410 b6 SewingStations 4
SHOr410 b7 no @type The sewing is a chain-stitch on four sewing stations (two pairs). It follows the pattern A defined by Bozzacchi. Four indipendent threads of animal origin has been used.
SHOr410 b12 SlipCase The book is preserved in its richly blind-tooled leather case. It is composed by two parts. The inner case is colored in violet with a light brown border stitched to the flap with a green sewing thread. Every surface is decorated with a pattern that recalls the one of the book cover using the same tools (quadruple straight lines palm shape double circles rosette). New tools are found: a rosette of bigger dimension a V-form and wavy lines put near to each other in order to form an interlaced band. To the inner case is attached a leather carrying strap fixed at the bottom with a leather knot. The strap is decorated with single straight lines. The outer envelope is of dark brown leather decorated with motifs that reproduce the latin cross and the floral pattern found on the book cover. The same tools have been used (quadruple straight lines palm shape double circles criss-cross X-shape rosettes and corniform motifs). Above the outer evelope is fixed a knot of rolled leather. A strip of light brown leather is looped around the lower border of the outer leather case. On the surface three additional leater straps are decorated with inserts of white light brown red leather that form 5 crosses. To these straps are attached long leather fringes today partly lost. The one in better condition is formed by four leather fringes 400 mm long.
SHOr411 b6 SewingStations 4
SHOr411 b7 no @type The sewing is a chain-stitch on four sewing stations (two pairs). The sewing follows the pattern A3 defined by G. Bozzacchi. The sewing start inside the first quire where for each pair of sewing station one long stitch is present. Two indipendent threads have been used. At the end of the sewing after binding the boards the ends of threads are knotted on the chain-stitches on the spine.
SHOr412 b6 SewingStations 3
SHOr412 b7 no @type The sewing is too damaged to identify the pattern. The codex was sewn on on three sewing stations. In the last quire are visibile 6 ends of threads so three threads has been used for the sewing. The system of board attachment is different from the typical one. On the boards for each sewing station there are three holes in a line parallel to the inner border and one hole in the inner edge. From the inner surface of the board the thread enters in the external two holes and then it converge in the middle hole. From the middle hole through a channel it exits from the inner edge of the board.
SHOr413 b6 SewingStations 4
SHOr413 b7 no @type The original sewing is lost and replaced with one in vegetal thread and pieces of textile.
SHOr415 b6 SewingStations 3
SHOr415 b7 no @type The sewing is a chain-stitch on three sewing stations. The thread is of animal origin. The sewing follows a pattern different from the one recorded by G. Bozzacchi. Two threads have been used (4 ends).

b1 no @type remaining of binding some new sewing

From this it looks to me like the only two instances which do not follow the guidelines are BNFabb195#b2 and CHJN005#b3 . These may be fixed as a minor oversight. One may also wish to go through those marked with @type='Other' but they may simply be overmatches of my query above.

The second option, adding an optional attribute to the data structure where none is foreseen at the moment implies changes in the application view, search, indexing, etc. If you opt for that all will need to be adapted accordingly (decoNote[@type='SewingStations'] with an integer will have to be removed, all other decoNotes consequently renumbered and the @n added where needed). The Guidelines would need to reflect this change, as well as the schema. I can do these and update the data with a transformation, and apply the changes accordingly. Do let me know what you opt for, and if the second, please reassign the issue to me.

The first and current approach, freed of the minor divergence above, which splits, where the encoders feels the need to do so, the types of information, has no implications. In the binding search the filter for 'number of Sewing Stations' will only consider those decoNote[@type='SewingStations'] whose content matches an integer (hence the search field is numeric value) see e.g. https://betamasaheft.eu/bindings?color=all&pastedown=all&BindingMaterial=all&fastening=all&SewingStationsN=4 I personally do not find this usage confusing. I think the encoder here has one way to enter information about the number of Sewing Stations, i.e. into a typed decoNote, but I understand, although the above evidence proves the opposite, that adding the description of the sewing stations into an untyped <decoNote> and their number into a typed one may be confusing.

I would hence propose to fix the two occurrences above, but additionally edit the schema to provide the rule mentioned above and limit the changes in the Guidelines to stylistic ones if any, as this is already explained and exemplified.

sorry, I overlooked a couple more '4.' for the Neukirchen mss in the results of the query

thea-m commented 3 years ago

Thank you! The first proposed option seems fine to me. If there are no objections @DariaElagina @ElianaDalSasso , I would make the small edit to the guidelines and the concerned few manuscripts.
