@eu-genia @DenisNosnitsin1970 @karljonaskarlsson

@LeonardBahr posted this request in a branch, that was recently deleted. I open this issue to keep the discussion seperated.

Dear all, dear Carsten,

hopefullly you are fine. It is really amazing to see these three new CAe IDs. Thank you for that!

1. Now, that we have specific CAe IDs for the above three Marian prayers, it would be helpful to connect them to the general CAe ID of _Mastabqʷǝʿān_: CAe 4711 (cf. https://betamasaheft.eu/works/LIT4711Mastabqwe/main). If you would like to, you can check, as a model, the general ID of the _Liṭon_ prayers with the specific IDs of each prayer listed thereunder under "General Description": https://betamasaheft.eu/works/LIT4860Litanies/main. In other words: It would make sense to have those three listed on the public page of CAe ID _Mastabqʷǝʿān_.

2. In the TEI/XML file of CAe 4711, the full text of each prayer has been entered. There is one exception, however, which is _Mastabqʷǝʿ za-Māryām (wa-kāʿba nāstabaqqʷǝʿā la-naqʿa ḥǝywat)_ (CAe 6908). It would be helpful if the full text could be added to the file. The full text is:

3. Finally, we talked about the incipit and explicit and I see they have been added to _Liṭon za-masqal_ (CAe 4713) and to the three Marian prayers (CAe 6906, CAe 6907, CAe 6908). On the other side, the incipit and explicit cannot be found in the files of other litanies, namely the _Liṭon_ prayers. In each file of those, the whole prayer has been written out. Thus, I would opt for a consistent solution: Either we include the whole prayer in each file or merely the incipit and explicit. What do you think? What is the usual way of doing that in BM? Of course, we can also add both, but it should be consistent for all three groups of the litanies (_Liṭon_, _Mastabqʷǝʿ_, _Za-yǝnaggǝś_). The texts are rather short, so personally I think we could write down the whole prayer.

  1. I see no problem in linking the individual Mastabqʷǝʿān to the general record of LIT4711Mastabqwe. However, there are two questions on my side before I want to make this change. First, is the set of Mastabqʷǝʿān in LIT4711Mastabqwe comparable to the eight litanies in LIT4860Litanies? It seems to me that the Mastabqʷǝʿān are much more numerous and their use and presence in manuscripts is more arbitrary than in the case of the eight litanies listed in LIT4860Litanies. This brings me to the second question: Is it preferable to list these texts in the abstract, or would it be better to put each of them into a relation?

  1. In the TEI/XML file of CAe 4711, the full text of each prayer has been entered. I am confused. In the record of LIT4711Mastabqwe, I do not find any mention of CAe 6908. Instead, there are two other Maryan prayers recorded as div, that are different from those, that you are dealing with:

I can list CAe 6908 and the other two (CAe 6906, CAe 6907), that you have suggested as Maryam3, Maryam4 and Maryam5, if you agree.

  1. Finally, we talked about the incipit and explicit and I see they have been added to Liṭon za-masqal (CAe 4713) and to the three Marian prayers (CAe 6906, CAe 6907, CAe 6908). On the other side, the incipit and explicit cannot be found in the files of other litanies, namely the Liṭon prayers. In each file of those, the whole prayer has been written out. Thus, I would opt for a consistent solution: Either we include the whole prayer in each file or merely the incipit and explicit. What do you think? What is the usual way of doing that in BM? Of course, we can also add both, but it should be consistent for all three groups of the litanies (Liṭon, Mastabqʷǝʿ, Za-yǝnaggǝś). The texts are rather short, so personally I think we could write down the whole prayer.

As far as you can provide the full text or give me a hint to a manuscript, where I can type them from, I see no problem in quoting the prayers in toto. I would not opt to reduce the information given in the records just for consistency.

LeonardBahr commented 5 months ago

The three Marian prayers (CAe 6906, CAe 6907, CAe 6908) and the Prayer for the Cross (CAe 4713) appear both separately in MSS as well as together with the earlier witnessed core of Mastabqʷǝʿān (i.e. those for the sick, the pilgrims, the rain, the fruits of the earth, etc.). Hence, on the one hand, they deserve an own CAe ID (we did this! :) ), and, on the other hand, they should be linked to the general record of Mastabqʷǝʿān (CAe 4711). If I understand the BM conventions correctly: Not each of the core Mastabqʷǝʿān appear separately in MSS, so not each of them would need a specific CAe ID.

"First, is the set of Mastabqʷǝʿān in LIT4711Mastabqwe comparable to the eight litanies in LIT4860Litanies? It seems to me that the Mastabqʷǝʿān are much more numerous and their use and presence in manuscripts is more arbitrary than in the case of the eight litanies listed in LIT4860Litanies."

I would say they are comparable to some extent: It is common for the core of Mastabqʷǝʿān to appear together and, beginning from the 17th century at the latest, it is common for the seven core Liṭon prayers to appear together. Optionally, other Mastabqʷǝʿān (like the Marian prayers or that of the cross) appear with the core of Mastabqʷǝʿān. And optionally, the two Liṭon prayers for the evening often appear with the other Liṭon prayers. (In the end, the entries for the Liṭon prayers would need to be thoroughly revised, because the current system of attributing to each prayer a weekday is not reflected by the earliest MSS. But this would require a separate issue.).

"This brings me to the second question: Is it preferable to list these texts in the abstract, or would it be better to put each of them into a relation?"

What do you mean? Which is the abstract you are writing about? What is "to put each of them into a relation"?

LeonardBahr commented 5 months ago

In the TEI/XML excerpt you quoted the first prayer is CAe 6906 and the second one is CAe 6907. So how are they different? They are exactly the prayers we want. Maybe we just have to add the CAe IDs here, too? And yes, you are right: Lacking is only the text of CAe 6908, whose text I provided above. So far, there are three witnesses of CAe 6908 (EMML 2969, SBPK Ms. orient. oct. 993, EMML 1206), but it is better to take the text of my forthcoming edition for BM, for which see above.

CarstenHoffmannMarburg commented 5 months ago

With relation I mean a relation encoded in <listRelation> in <body>, as for CAe 6906:

<listRelation>
                <relation name="saws:formsPartOf" active="LIT6906MastabqMar" passive="LIT4711Mastabqwe"/>
            </listRelation>
LeonardBahr commented 5 months ago

If you think that helps, we could that. I am not sure what the consequence of that step would be. In any case, it would be good to have links on the public page under "General Description" for the Marian prayers and for the Prayer of the Cross. I guess I know now what you meant with "abstract", i.e. the command in the TEI/XML language. Would this code help and be correct?:

"

Mastabqʷǝʿ za-Māryām I , Mastabqʷǝʿ za-Māryām II , Mastabqʷǝʿ za-Māryām III , Mastabqʷǝʿ za-masqal .

"

EDIT: I do not know how to show the code itself here in the chat. It automatically transforms itself into non-code text.

Did you already add the full text of CAe 6908 to the TEI/XML file of CAe 4711? All other Mastabqʷǝʿān are already written out there. Here it is again:

Yes, I think, I made all changes, that you suggested in https://github.com/BetaMasaheft/Works/pull/1115.
