support STL format along with OBJ - wikimedia commons supports STL, but *not* OBJ #11

@Daniel-Mietchen mentioned that wikimedia commons supports STL, but not OBJ.

@seltmann would it be easy to also generate STL? Or would you like me to have a look at converting OBJ to STL?

jhpoelen commented 1 year ago

@seltmann mentioned that exporting to STL can be done via MetaShape or Blender or other programs. However, OBJ is preferred because they support textures. And these textures are useful when using the 3D models in biodiversity research.

So, now the question to @Daniel-Mietchen et al. is: - How hard would it be to convince the wikidata-verse to accept OBJs in addition to STLs ?

jhpoelen commented 1 year ago

We'll try and look into ways to automatically convert OBJs into STLs. This way, we'll still have a way to tap into the existing wikidata-verse.

Example of a STL model for a Lion (Panthera leo) . . . imagine having STL models for Big Bee bees . . .

Wondering how we can enable to publication of STL along with the existing OBJ to help publicize/disseminate the 3d bee models via wikidata's taxon concepts.
