Another option on how to use the featured image is to place it below the header like a hero image.
Here I have the site title to the left and menu to the right (+ search icon) and the featured image below. Some pages have the title in the middle of the featured image, many do not.

It would be great to have the option to use featured image in the header as you have done it or have it behind the page/post title.
