There was some confusion regarding the messages produced by checkForCitationFile. I have updated the messages for clarity here.

Still long compared to traditional messages but I also don't see anyway around that. Yes I think these are an improvement to hopefully clarify to maintainers. I approve this whenever you are ready to merge
