Bioconductor teaching sticker #141

We are looking for new a sticker for the Bioconductor teaching committee.

@jorainer - if you feel inspired and have some time :-)

jorainer commented 3 years ago

The sticker could feature a school class room? That's just my immediate thought - open for suggestions and ideas.

lgatto commented 3 years ago

While we aim to develop the lessons with remote teaching in mind, they should be usable for remote and in-person teaching, of course. Having said that, a class conveys the message rather well, so the remote aspect shouldn't stop from using it.

I was initially thinking of the whole sticker being a board that would have the Bioconductor logo and other drawings, but I like that idea of a classroom even more!

Something like this image grabbed from the web, where the bioc note could stand for anything from a student, the teacher, or the topic of the class as a drawing on the board image

I can't picture a design that would convey both in-person and online learning. Perhaps one desk in the classroom could have a laptop on it.

jorainer commented 3 years ago

Thanks @kevinrue - this was also what I had in mind. Only, I will maybe just focus on the chalk-board - fitting the full classroom onto a sticker will be too busy - too many small details that are indistinguishable on the 5x5cm sticker...

jorainer commented 3 years ago

That's what I've come up so far. Still time for change requests - otherwise I will do the fine-tuning and create the sticker.

BiocClassroom

This looks great @jorainer! The only thing I was wondering is whether there should be something (a laptop?) on one of the desks, but perhaps that's just too small.

lgatto commented 3 years ago

It look really great! I agree that a laptop/computer could be more in-line with the remote teaching aspects, but I don't think it's absolutely necessary. The old-school benches and blackboard have a certain touch.

jorainer commented 3 years ago

Thanks for the feedback! I also thought about the laptop, but in the end decided against that for two reasons: 1) it will indeed be very small to see and 2) using a notebook in class (i.e. having it on the desk) does not really make it a virtual classroom - because the person is physically present. What would be better is to have a camera and a microphone on the teachers desk. I will try that. But it will again be very small and hard to see/understand.

First version of the sticker - I am quite satisfied, I'm just not sure with the DNA festoon. Without it the upper part of the sticker looks empty, but I'm afraid that people don't understand what it is...

BiocTeaching

lgatto commented 3 years ago

Really like it, thank you.

Do you think it would be possible to either move the URL along the bottom right edge, or reduce the BiocTeaching title - I have the impression that the two are a bit too close to each other and that in real life format, it looks as they belonged together.

jorainer commented 3 years ago

Yes, sure. Problem is I can not put the URL in it's standard location because it will become unreadable (due to the background image). I will play around with it a little.

jorainer commented 3 years ago

Updated version - put the URL in the top right corner:

BiocTeaching

csoneson commented 3 years ago

This looks really great!

jorainer commented 3 years ago

Thanks 😊 - And BiocTeaching is OK as a title? I would then add the sticker to the repo (under boards/BiocTeaching).

csoneson commented 3 years ago

That seems all good to me.

lgatto commented 3 years ago

Really great, thank you Jo!
