Could a banner that is a hexwall made up of a subset of the amazing stickers available in BiocStickers be a simple solution?

Sure, that's a possibility. For that it would be good to know the dimensions, i.e. width and height in pixels. I have already an idea for the logo - which could then eventually be used as foreground with the stickers in the background.

I'd suggest the following for the banner:

background could be indeed some of the hexstickers - and we could also drop the "F1000" in case. Question is also if we should make a sticker from that?

Looks great! Might it be possible to add 'Research' to F1000 so that the full journal name is in the logo and 'Bioconductor' somewhere so that the gateway name is visible in the banner. I'll ask the F1000 person re: banner width and height info

Next version: less emphasis on the background, lightened the background too, removed the F1000Research (as that's anyway shown on the web page).

@mritchie, I've added the png (and a Gimp xcf format) of the banner here. Let me know if there is something I should add/change.

I like the last one. If you want to include music notation, you could use a font that is common to sheet music (https://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/31184/what-are-the-common-fonts-used-in-music). For the key or time signature may represents something about the project. Perhaps add one flat (key of F for F1000) followed by 1000, M or a number which is important to F1000 and Bioc (??when it started etc). I'm not sure why Bioconductor would be would have 4/4 time signature ;-)) But others might know.

Thanks @aedin - you're right - why 4/4 - maybe even better if I drop that alltogether, then it get's cleaner and less busy. I will also have a look at the fonts you provided.
