Repository Transfer #9

Closed LiNk-NY closed 7 years ago

LiNk-NY commented 7 years ago

Hi Johannes @jotsetung, We love the stickers you've made for Bioconductor packages! It would be great if we can keep the repository under the Bioconductor GitHub account. As you know, I've spoken to Matthew Ritchie and he is willing to publish the designs he and Roberto Bonelli have been working on for a different set of Bioconductor stickers. It would be great to have a centralized repository for the sticker efforts under the Bioconductor account with appropriate credit (of course).

Looking forward to it!

Best regards, Marcel

Will the respective authors still have write access? Or will somebody in core be responsible to check and merge the PR?

jorainer commented 7 years ago

Would be awesome to have all stickers in one repo, I would really like that. But just as @lgatto mentioned, how will the access be managed for such a global repo?

LiNk-NY commented 7 years ago

Hi Laurent @lgatto, Leading and active sticker designers such as the parties mentioned here would have write access to the repository. Future contributors would have to create a pull request to have their stickers added to the repository or request write access if an active sticker designer status is desired. Best, Marcel

lgatto commented 7 years ago

Fine by me, thanks.

GuangchuangYu commented 7 years ago

A central repo should be awesome.

LiNk-NY commented 7 years ago

Hi Johannes @jotsetung, We can go ahead and transfer the repository to the Bioconductor account. I can add you and @mritchie (and Roberto) as collaborators. Others can also request for collaborator access to the repository if needed.

I'll close the issue once this is done. Thanks!

Regards, Marcel

lgatto commented 7 years ago

@LiNk-NY - please add to, as I plan to update and add stickers.

jorainer commented 7 years ago

Great!

GuangchuangYu commented 7 years ago

@LiNk-NY please add to. I also plan to add stickers.

jorainer commented 7 years ago

@LiNk-NY just that I didn't miss anything - I'll wait until you created the repo in the Bioconductor account and then I start adding the stickers we've got so far, right?

lgatto commented 7 years ago

@jotsetung there is a transfer button in the repo settings to transfer the whole repo as it is to the Bioconductor organisation. They might have to update access settings accordingly.

jorainer commented 7 years ago

@lgatto thanks, wasn't aware of that. Let's wait also on @LiNk-NY reply.

LiNk-NY commented 7 years ago

@lgatto @jotsetung The repository transfer would be a smoother transition. I would then add collaborators as soon as that is sent over. Thanks.

jorainer commented 7 years ago

Marcel @LiNk-NY , would it help if I added you as a collaborator to my repo so that you could directly do the transfer (don't know if that would work if you aren't the owner of BioC-stickers though).

LiNk-NY commented 7 years ago

@jotsetung Johannes, I think only the owner can do this.

jorainer commented 7 years ago

@LiNk-NY Can I already transfer the repo? I guess I don't have write access to the Bioconductor account.

lgatto commented 7 years ago

@jotsetung - you don't need to have any access to the destination account; you only need to own the repo.

jorainer commented 7 years ago

Did not work. Tried to transfer the ownership over to Bioconductor but got this error message:

You don’t have the permission to create repositories on Bioconductor
lgatto commented 7 years ago

Ok then, I thought I had been able to do something like that in the past. Sorry for the confusion.

jorainer commented 7 years ago

No prob. Might well be that it worked for you - you are in the Bioconductor group.

LiNk-NY commented 7 years ago

Okay, you can add me to the collaborators group and I'll see if I can transfer it.

mtmorgan commented 7 years ago

I can no longer remember if this were a strictly internal discussion, but have you considered submodules as a way to manage this collaboration? They would provide a common place for stickers to be made available (Bioc) without requiring everyone to have ownership / contribute to all parts of the repository. This also allows repo owners to retain less ambiguous ownership of their intellectual property.

ADDED: reading a little more on submodules, this may or may not be such a great idea -- feel free to evaluate and reject

jorainer commented 7 years ago

@mtmorgan Thanks for the suggestion - but reading the doc on the submodules I feel that it might be a little too complicated. I would rather go for (a limited list of) collaborators and contributions by pull requests. Ownership of stickers and packages is a tricky one, but I like there the idea from @lgatto to have it in the sticker's README.

@LiNk-NY Done.

LiNk-NY commented 7 years ago

Hi Johannes @jotsetung, I am unable to meddle with the settings of the repository. From reading the docs, there can only be one person with repository ownership. That said, we can do it the long way and transfer the repository to my account @LiNk-NY and then I can put it on the Bioconductor account. I have write permission.

jorainer commented 7 years ago

OK, I'll do. @lgatto , @GuangchuangYu @sgibb , please don't push changes now.

LiNk-NY commented 7 years ago

This will take about 5-10 minutes depending on how fast GitHub updates repository transfers.

LiNk-NY commented 7 years ago

The transfer went well and I've added a team / collaborators for the repo. If there are any issues. Please let me know. Regards, Marcel
