@jorainer are you willing to have a go at it?

Ideas from MA locals are much appreciated. cc: @schifferl @vjcitn @aedin @lpantano

Sure Levi! Happy to give it a try!

schifferl commented 4 years ago

Paul Revere (https://bit.ly/34vEHvU) with the Bioconductor logo it his hand might be cool : )

aedin commented 4 years ago

Hi For the meetup, I toyed with using the font of "B" from the Boston Red Sox or Boston Globe. The red/blue of the Boston Red Sox is nice but doesn't really blend well with the Bioconductor colors.

These images, along with the DFCI, Harvard and Simmons logos are at; https://www.dropbox.com/sh/lo5cpx7gtbhmubg/AADtL-2NOpJ43UfVDTcPdMgoa?dl=0

Thanks Lucas and Aedin! @schifferl @aedin Idea: Paul Revere on his horse in mid-gallop with the Bioconductor logo as a flag and trailing with the Boston skyline in the background and the B in Bioc2020 can have the Boston Globe font (Idk if the font has copyright  )

LiNk-NY commented 4 years ago

BTW Lucas I deleted a duplicate comment.

Just wanted to check in :)

This will go into flyers and the website as soon as it's ready.

Do you have a deadline? I'm quite busy at present, that's why I did not work on it yet - thought there is still some time left ...

aedin commented 4 years ago

I think the font is “old English”

Found an article about Boston globe fonts

An Old English typeface is used as the nameplate for the Boston Globe. Also called Fraktur or black letter fonts

The rest of the site is cutting edge and modern. Fonts used: Miller Headline, Benton Sans, Georgia, Helvetica

BioC2020

csoneson commented 4 years ago

This looks cool (don't know much about Boston though so I will leave the content comments to those who do)! But it should be Bioc 2020, not 2019 :)

jorainer commented 4 years ago

thanks @csoneson - well spotted :)

jorainer commented 4 years ago

and it's showing Paul Revere with the Bioconductor sign as flag jumping through the B of the Boston Red Sox with the skyline of Boston in the background (as seen from the sea). But I need also some cross checks/feedback here from the locals as I was never in Boston

vjcitn commented 4 years ago

I like it a lot but the bottom is peculiar. The view of the city seems to be "from the ocean" and so the horse would be traveling over water. If that is intended put some ocean waves around the B?

mtmorgan commented 4 years ago

looks great to me! from the devteam, one person didn't get the historical allusion (I guess like Charlotte?) another suggested Revere ahead of his time in announcing the Bioconductor revolution!

vjcitn commented 4 years ago

Would Revere wear a red coat?

LiNk-NY commented 4 years ago

@jorainer I love the sticker but my concern is the copyright / trademark infringement. I'm no lawyer but we shouldn't take the risk unnecessarily. Aedin suggested the Boston Globe "B" which uses the Miller typeface. I don't think it is copyrighted but it may be a safer bet.

jorainer commented 4 years ago

Would Revere wear a red coat?

Good question - probably not. I did just use red because I saw it somewhere on the internet. But you're right; maybe I change it for brown.

Regarding the copyright - I think that's more if you copy it - but I did draw it myself - Im also not a lawyer, but I thought that might be OK - It's just that this B might be more familiar to people outside of Boston (at least I recognized it) while I had no idea about the Boston Globe B...

aedin commented 4 years ago

Love the horse jumping through the B. Very clever. Paul Revere shouted the "red coat are coming". The English worn red coats.. I think his coat might be navy???

I agree. Brown is good. I think any dark color (brown/dark green/navy) works fine. No one knows what color coat he wore (that I know of.. but I didn't study American history in that much detail). He may well have been red!

So the B in "stylized form" is trademarked to the Red Sox and they have multiple trademarked most are for baseball clothing but one is on "printed matter" but I think its specific to those "featuring baseball" so I think we're ok. http://tsdr.uspto.gov/#caseNumber=76287208&caseType=SERIAL_NO&searchType=statusSearch http://tsdr.uspto.gov/#caseNumber=76287208&caseType=SERIAL_NO&searchType=statusSearch But I am no expert on this. jorainer commented 4 years ago

Thanks @aedin for the info! I will also think of a version without the B - just in case. And I will change the coat color to blue or brown - depending what looks better.

jorainer commented 4 years ago

I made now a version without the B: it features now simply a giant Paul Revere jumping over the skyline of Boston (directly into the ocean?). The font for the BioC 2020 is Old English - seems to be the font of the Boston Globe.

BioC2020-no-B

kevinrue commented 4 years ago

If "jumping into the ocean" raises too many health and safety concerns for Revere, perhaps one could just say that the horse is standing up, e.g. https://images.fineartamerica.com/images/artworkimages/mediumlarge/1/roy-rogers-and-trigger-hollywood-western-legends-mary-bassett.jpg I'm not sure whether that even requires a re-draw or simply looking at the current version in a different way.

kevinrue commented 4 years ago

Alternatively, drawing the front legs of the horse more similarly to the statue of Revere (https://images.fineartamerica.com/images-medium-large-5/statue-of-paul-revere-in-boston-vladone.jpg), i.e. only off leg in not touching the ground, might also give a better impression of standing/not moving, in contrast to the current version with both legs off the ground that gives an impression of galloping/jumping into the sea.

jorainer commented 4 years ago

only thing with standing instead of moving is that Revere was in fact galloping to warn the people that the brits are coming - so I would like keeping him galloping.

kevinrue commented 4 years ago

Oh right! Totally makes sense. I'm one of those who doesn't have the history background, so I can only speak graphically. Amazing job job of graphic art and cultural accuracy as always @jorainer !

jorainer commented 4 years ago

it's more that I'm a little reluctant to re-draw everything ;)

let's see what the majority says to the new sticker without the B (although I prefer the version with the B)

aedin commented 4 years ago

Hi I would keep with Paul Revere on the galloping horse. Any other horse isn't boston. If you did the other others its more western USA style. Stick with Paul

it's more that I'm a little reluctant to re-draw everything ;)

let's see what the majority says to the new sticker without the /B/ (although I prefer the version with the /B/)

If we can use the trademarked 'B', I would opt for combining both stickers into one (with Boston Globe font and the red 'B'). Great work!

OK, next iteration. Paul is now no longer jumping into the ocean. Not sure if the BioC 2020 is readable?

BioC2020-no-B

There might be more real estate on the right hand side for the 'BioC 2020'.

readable ... but challenging. cobblestones out in the bay? i thought paul and horse leaping through the B in the water was better

First of all thank you for all your hard work on this I loved the first one with Paul leaping through the B. Maybe adapt the B slightly so its not exactly the same as the red sox and go with it. (maybe cover part of the font with the Bioconductor symbols!)

OK, summarizing: I will work on the first layout:

Thumbs up if you agree with that, thumps down if not.

jorainer commented 4 years ago

Maybe adapt the B slightly so its not exactly the same as the red sox and go with it.

I could actually remove the spike on the right side of the B, then it will be a different font - just to be on the safe side...
