Ease of CoC discovery #38

Closed SaskiaFreytag closed 2 years ago

Hi Kevin,

We had another CoC meeting and in this meeting, the question came up of whether it is a good idea to have people find a link to the CoC rather than the actual CoC when clicking on the link on the Bioconductor website. Given how hard it is to make people read CoC documents should we not make it as findable as possible?

Interested to hear your thoughts,

Saskia

Assuming you refer to discovery by "google search" ranking the biocondutor.org page with two links as the top result:

It may simply be a matter of giving time to Google updating their search results to rank the github pages of code of conduct higher than the bioconductor page. Hopefully, once conferences link to the github pages, Google will pick that up and rank the github pages increasingly higher.

Deleting the bioconductor.org page might speed things up, but then we'd lose those redirect links, which would be even worse during that transition phase IMHO. Maybe once the github pages start appearing in the top 10 Google results, we could consider that to speed up the final climb in the ranking of search results.

An alternative could also be to move the github pages of translations into the bioconductor.org website (i.e. going somewhat back in time), but that would mean a whole lot of new contributors and commits to the main website for every update to the CoC policy, when my understanding of the goals what to trim down the main website and move "independent" sections of the website in different repositories (e.g., mentorship, package guidelines). It would also beg the question of why that part of the main website is supports multiple translations while all the rest of the website doesn't.

Tricky indeed, but I'm personally OK with the current status quo, hoping that continued contibutions to the github pages - combined with lack of updates to bioconductor.org and conference links to the github pages - will eventually increase the discoverability of the github pages.

See https://github.com/Bioconductor/bioconductor.org/pull/148

Locally messing up with the HTML of the page worked. Let's see when the PR is merged if that works on the main website too.
