High difficulty warning may be unsuitable for experienced surveyors #337

Closed andrewvanbreda closed 2 months ago

andrewvanbreda commented 2 months ago

It has come to our attention that the existing high difficulty message shown for ID difficulty above 2 may not be appropriate for experienced recorders.

Existing text

"It looks like you have entered the following species that may sometimes be difficult to identify:\n{species_list}\nPlease consider attaching a photo of the plant to aid the verification process. Click Cancel to make changes, or click OK to continue to save."

changed to the following partically based on suggestion by Sam, although I have altered the first part of the suggestion for the reason given below.

"Note for beginner or intermediate botanists only:\n\nIt looks like you have entered the following species that may sometimes be difficult to identify:\n{species_list}\nUnless you are very certain, please consider attaching a photo of the plant to aid the verification process. Click Cancel to make changes, or click OK to continue to save."

@Sam-Amy I have altered the wording from your original suggestion after seeing it actually on screen. I was slightly concerned the suggested text might give the person the impression that the system had detected they are a beginner or intermediate, which is a problem for experts, but also no such detection is present. The second part of your suggestion remains the same

The following forms have been altered indicator indicator-2015 (old form still used in edit mode where appropriate) inventory inventory-2015 (old form still used in edit mode where appropriate)

@andrewvanbreda I think it would be best to leave the message as it is for the moment and just fix the underlying genus-related issue. The problem with the new wording is that this message only applies to Inventory level only, yet the new message suggests that the recorders are at a lower level explicitly. I would suggest that the best option is to deactivate the message under the underlying genus-related issue is fixed.

Hi Oli (and @Sam-Amy FYI),

The email I sent about the Genus was a mistake, please check the follow up email to that . The system is in fact working as intended, so there are no bugs to fix.

It is the ID difficulty message that is the problem, that applies to both Inventory and Indicator also.

The code is correct, but it is the wording that distressed the user.

This is why the "Note for beginner or intermediate botanists only:" was added to the front of the message, so that experts would know immediately it didn't apply to them, so would not be distressed by reading it.

I can revert to the old message if you wish to, but be aware that is what caused the difficulty in the first place, so we will still have the problem if we don't adjust the message in some way.

Note the wording can be different between Indicator/Inventory if you wish it to be. It can also be deactivated on one of them if you so wish.

By the way I didn't understand this bit in your message "yet the new message suggests that the recorders are at a lower level explicitly".

The message is almost the same as the old one apart from "Note for beginner or intermediate botanists only:" It is at the beginning (on its own line), and there is also the bit Sam suggested "Unless you are very certain"

Anyway, let me know any further thoughts given the above info

Andy

Just a quick thought, a different fix would be to leave the message as is, and up the applicable ID difficulty. At the moment it is 2.

Ok, sorry. My response was if the Genus thing was true, in which case it would only apply to Inventory level, because it is only there that folk have free choice. I suggest the following text. The references to "beginner and intermediate" have been removed as I think this confusing if shown to Inventory level folk. The point was to prompt all; if the message implies that it is for the two lower levels when it appears at Inventory, it will probably just be ignored.

"It looks like you have entered the following species that may sometimes be difficult to identify:\n{species_list}\nYou may wish to attach photos to aid the verification process. Note that this is not a requirement, and if you are happy with your identifications then please proceed!\nClick Cancel to make changes, or click OK to continue to save."

To be honest the message was already fairly innocuous, and it seems to me that the person was quite quick to take unnecessary offence. @Sam-Amy you have probably already done this, but perhaps you can send some mollifying text for Karen to use in the case prompting this. For example "whilst we trust the majority of records made at this level, we are trying to encourage the submission of photos do allow us to help those surveyors who may have trouble with difficult plants, and no offence was meant. We have updated the message to make this clearer."
