Pantheon issues as experienced by the committed user Don Stenhouse #293
Received this from Don via the Pantheon email. These issues were reported in 2018 but have not yet been dealt with.
Exact words: I attach some notes I made up to a couple of years ago, following which I lost the will to report anything - very little happened.
Notes copied from Word doc sent by Don:
08/06/2018
I imported a list into Pantheon which included several species which Pantheon doesn’t have current names for.
Coleoptera
Parathelcus pollinarius has to be imported as Ceutorhynchus pollinarius despite pollinarius being in Parathelcus for many years.
09/06/2018
I pasted a species list in, but on clicking ‘check’, the list disappeared and nothing happened. Multiple attempts produced the same response.
11/06/2018
Curculionidae
Hypera conmaculata has to be entered as Hypera (Eririnomorphus) pollux, which was the name used two checklists ago!
Syrphidae
What is this nonsensical synonymy for?
Cheilosia albitarsis (Meigen, 1822)
Cheilosia albitarsis (Meigen, 1822)
Cheilosia albitarsis sens.lat. (Meigen, 1822)
Cheilosia albitarsis sens.str. (Meigen, 1822) [syn. of Cheilosia albitarsis (Meigen, 1822)]
Megachilidae
Another example of daft synonymy - creating an issue just because someone doesn’t know or want to use the subgenus, which for biological recording purposes is irrelevant anyway. The subgenus is of no practical value.
Osmia bicornis was not accepted and I got these -
Osmia (Osmia) bicornis (Linnaeus, 1758) [Red Mason Bee]
Osmia bicornis [Genus inferred] (Linnaeus, 1758) [syn. of Osmia (Osmia) bicornis (Linnaeus, 1758)] [Red Mason Bee]
29/07/2018
Bembidion quadrimaculatum is shown as a ‘Section 41 Priority Species’, which it isn’t - it is actually common and the recent review by Mark Telfer doesn’t suggest any conservation issues. I think it is conflated with Bembidion quadrispustulatum, which is on the Section 41 list.
I edited a species list by deleting a species but I couldn’t save my change.
Sometimes a ‘duplicate species’ was flagged up and sometimes it wasn’t.
12/08/2018
I entered Lasius niger sensu lato, was told that there was no match, so changed it to Lasius niger, knowing I would be told the same.
I then got this nonsense, which consists mainly of two ‘options’ repeated three times.
Lasius niger sensu lato [accepted name] - matching exactly what I entered down to the spacing between words
Lasius niger (Linnaeus, 1758) [Small Black Ant]
Lasius niger sens.lat. [syn. of Lasius niger sensu lato]
Lasius niger sens.str. (Linnaeus, 1758) [syn. of Lasius niger (Linnaeus, 1758)] [Small Black Ant]
Lasius niger sens.str. (Linnaeus, 1758) [syn. of Lasius niger (Linnaeus, 1758)] [Small Black Ant]
Lasius niger sens.lat. [syn. of Lasius niger sensu lato]
Lasius niger sens.str. (Linnaeus, 1758) [syn. of Lasius niger (Linnaeus, 1758)] [Small Black Ant]
Lasius niger sens.lat. [syn. of Lasius niger sensu lato]

Just adding Chorisops nagatomii is not accepted, but either of these is, despite both being Chorisops nagatomii. Surely if you enter Chorisops nagatomii you are saying ‘I am adding the species known as the Bright Four-spined Legionnaire’ (who came up with these unwieldly vernacular names?)
Chorisops nagatomii Rozkosný, 1979 [accepted name]
Chorisops nagatomii Rozkosný, 1979 [Bright Four-spined Legionnaire] [accepted name]
Ditto
Stratiomys potamida (Meigen, 1822)
Stratiomys potamida Meigen, 1822 [Banded General]

Hylaeus dilatatus (Kirby, 1802)
This is shown as RDB3 in Pantheon but the BWAR’s site has it as 'not scarce or threatened'. Until recently it was incorrectly recorded as Hylaeus annularis (Kirby, 1802), which is a much scarcer species that is restricted to the south coast and according to Else & Edwards (2018) name changes for that species ‘could potentially cause confusion’. As H. dilatatus is not regarded as rare in that publication it is likely that the Pantheon status is in error, especially as H. annularis is shown without status, so probably conflated with that of H. dilatatus. A check on the JNCC designations spreadsheet, (JNCC, 2018) lists H. annularis as Rare but has no entry for H. dilatatus.
01/11/2018
Phyllotreta diademata sensu auctt. Brit non Foudras, 1860 needs synonymising with Phyllotreta astrachanica Lopatin, 1977 following the recent name change as shown in Duff (2018).
Sitona lepidus Gyllenhal, 1834 needs synonymising with Sitona obsoletus Gmelin, 1790) following the recent name change as shown in Duff (2018) and ditto for these -
Aphodius contaminatus is now Nimbus contaminatus
Aphodius haemorrhoidalis is now Otophorus haemorrhoidalis
Aphodius rufipes is now Acrossus rufipes
08/12/018
Hypera (Antidonus) zoilus is now Brachypera (Antidonus) zoilus (Scopoli, 1763)
29/12/2018
Smicronyx reichi (Gyllenhal, 1836) should be spelt reichii.
Tatianaerhynchites aequatus (Linnaeus, 1767) is still listed as Neocoenorrhinus aequatus - the combination has been in use for several years.
The Lasius niger fun item is still there.
Lasius niger (unique match could not be found - click on the correct option below)
Lasius niger (Linnaeus, 1758) [Small Black Ant]
Lasius niger sensu lato
Lasius niger sens.str. (Linnaeus, 1758) [syn. of Lasius niger (Linnaeus, 1758)] [Small Black Ant]
Lasius niger sens.str. (Linnaeus, 1758) [syn. of Lasius niger (Linnaeus, 1758)] [Small Black Ant]
Lasius niger sens.str. (Linnaeus, 1758) [syn. of Lasius niger (Linnaeus, 1758)] [Small Black Ant]
Lasius niger sens.lat. [syn. of Lasius niger sensu lato]
Lasius niger sens.lat. [syn. of Lasius niger sensu lato]
Lasius niger sens.lat. [syn. of Lasius niger sensu lato]

This has been showing for several days
Deprecated function: Function create_function() is deprecated in helper_base::explode_lines_key_value_pairs() (line 1995 of D:\web sites\drupal7\sites\www.brc.ac.uk.pantheon\modules\iform\client_helpers\helper_base.php).
All the above sent to Martin Harvey on 05.05.2019, with zero result.
17.06.2019
Despite the email I sent to Martin Harvey on 05/05/2019, none of my points has been addressed.
Brachypera zoilus is still shown as Hypera zoilus.
The Lasius niger issue is still there.
The irritating use of sub genera is still there.
Additionally, although a Bembidion quadrimaculatum record I entered for a site - Western Shale - is not shown in the species list, it is shown in the analysis under ‘Habitats & resources: broad biotopes’ as a Section 41 Priority Species! It isn’t and never has been.
09.08.2019
Acrossus luridus is still shown as Aphodius luridus.
What’s this for? Two identical accepted names offered to replace the perfectly valid name entered
Bombus hypnorum (unique match could not be found - click on the correct option below)
Bombus hypnorum (Linnaeus, 1758) [Tree Bumblebee]
Bombus hypnorum (Linnaeus, 1758) [Tree Bumblebee]
So entering Bombus hypnorum produces this twaddle.
16.11.2019
Brachypera dauci is still listed as Hypera dauci
29.10.2020
All Contacyphon (Scirtidae) species have to be entered as Cyphon.
I tried entering Romualdius angustisetulus (Hansen, 1915) (Curculionidae) but it wasn’t recognised.
As the species used to be in Cathormiocerus I tried that combination but that didn’t work and neither did any other variants.
I also tried its congener Romualdius bifoveolatus (Beck, 1817) and that wasn’t recognised either.
So the genus is not there apparently.
The longhorn beetle Tetrops starkii Chevrolat, 1859 is shown as RDB3 on Pantheon although it was reviewed in 2019 by Alexander (2019) and is now regarded as an introduced species without status.
The weevil Aulacobaris picicornis (Marsham, 1802) has to be entered as Baris picicornis (Marsham, 1802) despite the former name being in the 2012 checklist.
The weevil Tatianrhynchites aequatus (Linnaeus, 1767) has to be entered as Neocoenorrhinus aequatus (Linnaeus, 1767). This despite M. Harvey being informed about it on 5th May 2019, so 18 months ago.
The bee Hylaeus dilatatus (Kirby, 1802) is shown as RDB3 on Pantheon although it is not regarded elsewhere as anything other than local and is obviously well recorded and widespread in southern England.
13.12.2020
Tournotaris bimaculata (Fabricius, 1787) has to be entered with the very out of date name Notaris bimaculatus
Received this from Don via the Pantheon email. These issues were reported in 2018 but have not yet been dealt with.
