Adding plant/butterfly names in local languages #94

Open JordyvdB97 opened 1 year ago

Hi Everyone,

Is it possible to add the local names of flora and butterflies to the drop down lists? This speeds up the data entering, as our volunteers write down the species in Dutch and we now have to look up all the scientific names before entering the data. I attached a list for the Dutch flora and butterfly names.

Maybe it is useful to have have an option to select the language in which you want the list? Dutch would than be only the Dutch names and scientific names (including the ones without a Dutch name).

Kind regards, Jordy van der Beek.

Hi @JordyvdB97 @DavidRoy

OK, so I think I can see 3 challenges here.

  1. The biggest problem I can see here is that for the pan-trap flowing plants form, we are actually using the UK Master List with a "flowering plant" taxon group filter. @DavidRoy do you have any thoughts on this? as it is controlled list, I can't just import data onto it. Do you think what we spoke about the other day needs revisiting? that actually those species do now need cloning into their own list?

  2. I think the butterflies list is less of an issue, but I would need to confirm with Gary that altering the EBMS Butterflies list would not have an unwanted effect on EBMS. If so, perhaps this might also need cloning.

  3. If the above points are doable, then I would make this 3rd point. Obviously multi-lingual capability needs to be added for this to work. We do have this capability running on other sites which can be added to SPRING (UK PoMS for example is multi-language, including Welsh). @DavidRoy What do you think about the future direction of the multi-lingual element of the site.

Perhaps this might be time to think about having a site wide language selector like on UK PoMS? (the difference being it wouldn't be a complete translation, but just certain elements could then be displayed in Dutch, and also consistently across multiple pages). Further languages can then be added to the same system as needed.

@andrewvanbreda, The EBMS Butterflies list already has all the Dutch common names (and other languages) in it. Users of https://butterfly-monitoring.net/ set their language in their user profile to determine what names appear in the recording forms.

Hi @JimBacon Thanks for that info, that is really useful to know. That is one thing that isn't a problem then. Maybe that same interface could be employed depending if David wants the site to work more like EBMS or UK PoMS (or even go as far as change the sites so they are all the same)

The interface leaves a lot to be desired and is the subject of an issue elsewhere. Maybe you can do a nice job and we can copy it to EBMS!
