Sensitive species 3: new workflow #1715

Open kitenetter opened 3 months ago

kitenetter commented 3 months ago

Set up a workflow for iRecord that matches the blurring specific in the NBN lists.

@robin-hutchinson to provide list based on NBN national list.

Need to include columns for TVK, taxon, level of blur, and relevant country/countries.

May need to update some TVKs in the NBN lists to be the current preferred TVKs.

Sensitive Species List.csv

R code to produce the file: https://github.com/robin-hutchinson/indicia_reporting/blob/main/taxonomy/species_lists/sensitive_species_list.R

Thanks @robin-hutchinson

For the workflow in the warehouse we will need the blur values expressed as metres rather than km, can you make that adjustment in the code?

robin-hutchinson commented 1 month ago

Yes! Sensitive Species List.csv

kitenetter commented 1 month ago

@johnvanbreda the above file contains the blurring we need to set up, for four regions: England, Isle of Man, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The intention is to apply this to all data sources that share with iRecord for reporting, UNLESS a source already has its own sensitive species settings.

But we could set it up specifically for iRecord data first, especially if there are any associated issues we need to consider before applying it to other non-iRecord sources.

Would it be useful to include a column for taxon group in this file? If it is ever going to be subject to scheme or other review, that would facilitate sorting considerably.

Sure - Sensitive Species List.csv

kitenetter commented 1 month ago

Thanks, that's a useful addition. At the moment there is no defined procedure for seeking comments or making changes to the sensitive species lists. Natural England are aware of this and intend to address it; it will need coordination with the other country agencies and JNCC. BRC does not have a role in maintaining the lists, but we can facilitate liaison between the schemes and the agencies.

ok, but there may still be a need for review relative to the matching of the NBN lists to these lists (e.g. changes resulting from splits/merges and coverage of infraspecific taxa). For example, taxonomic changes now mean that the TVK for the liverwort Mesoptychia rutheana is taken in a broad sense (i.e. Mesoptychia rutheana s.l.), covering M. rutheana s.str. and M. gillmanii var. laxa. If applied simply as specified, then the current list would actually not blur records made against these nested taxa, which now need their own TVKs listing (at least on a face value intepretation of the Scottish and Northern Irish lists).
