I think Wordpress uses the Scriptaculous library, which I don't think is
compatible
with the mootools library used by Slideshow 2!. See this thread on compatibility
between Mootools and Scriptaculous:

I ran into the same problem with Joomla as it uses Mootools v1.1 and this uses
mootools v1.2

Yes - unfortunately Mootools cannot be used concurrently with either Prototype
or jQuery frameworks (although
I believe jQuery has a compatibility mode that will work).
Mootools 1.2 also has a compatibility mode that will allow MT 1.1 scripts to
work with the newer framework.
You might look into that!

Aww, that sucks. Would there perhaps be an alternative script I could use to
produce
the same effect?

if you want to use this slideshow2 script with mootools 1.2 on wordpress, try
