The U.S. International Trade Administration (ITA) is looking to encourage the adoption of data privacy certifications by streamlining the process through a new secure web application.
Appetite
The due date for the challenge is October 15 at 11:59 PM ET, so we have less than two weeks.
Solution
We'll prototype a project management solution that seeks to add value by building trust in the credibility and accountability of the system.
Rabbit holes
The challenge is poorly defined: Instead of framing a problem, the hosts have simply provided a list of "requirements" for a pre-determine solution and basket of features. They seem to expect that all someone needs to mock up this list of screens and features and they will have a well-designed product. (Though I suspect this approach has failed them before.)
Instead of playing their game, we're simply going to use the challenge as inspiration for a problem statement and approach the challenge in our own way. While we don't expect a high chance of winning, it will still be a good exercise for us and hopefully a teachable moment for the hosts as well.
Another flaw in their challenge design is the sheer amount of repetitive screens and features that have required as part of the brief. Not only is not feasible for us to produce that amount of content, it's not productive as we would want to validate our core assumptions and ideas before spending time pushing pixels for ancillary screens and interactions.
No-gos
We're not prototyping the 50-question process, since it seems very similar to the 18-question process.
We're not mindlessly mocking up screens based on the provided "user stories."
We're not going mock up screens that are not important to the core experience we're testing.
We're not including features simply because they're mentioned in the brief.
