Hello, is there a way to run this on Linux, with mono, wine or proton?

BlueMystical commented 1 year ago

Hi, yes EDHM can run on Linux ^_^ Unfortunately i do not have a Linux machine, so i can not give ya a guide on the process. But a few of our users on the Discord managed to do it. Here is a link: https://discord.com/channels/773552741632180224/773553131568889916/1016666369774858240

and sorry for the late answer. Join our Discord for on time support. Regards.

It would be extremely helpful if you could publish those users' findings in a github readme or website.

@outfrost: At our Discord server we have plenty of documents, and channels for every situation, including a community supported Linux channel. https://discord.gg/ZaRt6bCXvj

I know you have a Discord server, you've made it abundantly clear. I'm suggesting an improvement.

Discord is far from a permanent documentation archive. It's built for live communication, and features such as search or old message retrieval tend to break intermittently. You will most likely retire from the project in a few years, and the Discord server might disappear, especially if fewer people overall are playing ED at that point. Information might get accidentally deleted, and Discord provides no way to get it back. Some people are at the limit for the maximum number of Discord servers joined, and cannot join yours. Some people don't use Discord.

That's why I think putting this information in an accessible, preserved location is a good idea. It makes it simpler for people to start using the mod, reduces how much Discord members get asked the same basic questions over and over, and it ensures that in 10 years, when only 12 people are still playing ED, they can still use the mod for its accessibility benefits (e.g. for colourblindness). There already is a website and a GitHub Wiki, seems like one of these places would be perfect for guides.

I would be using EDHM on its own, without the GUI app, if not for the fact that I can't download themes outside the app, the app which currently crashes with a DevXpress constructor exception when I try to run it via wine or mono, and fails on missing framework config under dotnet core, and the fact that EDHM itself ships with a modified theme by default, not allowing me to change only specific colour values in the config files.

I hope this helps contextualise why I made the suggestion in the first place. If that is not something you or the community are willing to entertain, that's fine, feel free to disregard. If there's a way I could help bring out-of-the-box Linux support to EDHM_UI, please let me know.

Thank you so much for this. I've felt so alone. I'm sure discord is wonderful from a development standpoint when working with someone else on code and bouncing ideas off each other, but to reiterate ...

CHAT IS NOT DOCUMENTATION.

For documentation to be in any way usesable it needs to be easily searchable.

There is NO, and there wont be any official Linux Support. We have a Discord server where Linux users help each others. If that's not good enough for you, there is the door.
