Same here, if I change the setting to false, then Tab key doesn't work at all.
just like the tab key is broken.

For me, the tab key still works, but the tabs are also still expanded to spaces.

Open source does not mean forcing your indentation style onto me. Please
support tabs in the Arduino editor.

On Windows 7 64-bit
with Arduino IDE 1.0.5-r2
AND Arduino IDE 1.5.6-r2
I am experiencing the described behaviour which is very annoying.

Changing "editor.tabs.expand=true" to false in preferences has the undesired
effect of breaking the tab key.
Seriously? Tabs are important, right up their with curly braces and numbers,
and you guys let this remain broken for nearly 4 years? WTF?

This is nuts. Now I'm going to be setting up an external editor, just to deal
with this extremely annoying problem, which is probably an EXTREMELY simple
fix. I might even poke around in the Arduino Github to see if it's a fix I have
time to implement...

Really? I've found records of this issue dating back to 2010. How long does it
take to fix something like this? Jeez..
