unit tests would be nice to make our development more error-proof.

the tests need to run before a PR can be merged so we don't accidentally break things :)

Apologies, I thought the tests were always enabled (seems like the tests were disabled in #2, but I don't understand why). Regardless, the tests need to be re-enabled.
