Theme ideas in response to this list:
Companion - maybe a bird, or Wall-E style? Assassin - clockwork spider of course Mechanical Spiders - Skyrim dwemer style?(http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/elderscrolls/images/d/d7/Dwarven_Spider_3.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20131112050436) General/Clockwork powered - Did you ever see Doctor Who's clockwork droids? (http://www.eyeofhorus.org.uk/images/toys/character-options/2007/characteroptions-2007-clockwork-brain.jpg) General/Steam powered - something like these? This is just the result of some intensive google image searching.
As for clockwork vs steam powered I'd go with clockwork being weak but agile, and steam being strong but slow, that kind of thing, to further your ideas so far.
Also, not sure how easy this is to get across in minecraft, but when it comes to texturing, do you think you could get an uncanny valley thing going, or would you want to? Stuff that looks a bit too creepily close to human? I'm not sure how well it would fit if you were going for a more industrial steampunk theme though, as to me that would lend itself to less human-looking robots with big clunky parts and stuff.
Nice ideas. Dwemer are a big source of inspiration for this, cheers for that deviantart link, also very much what I had in mind. Hadn't got to that concept stage yet myself, no matter :P
Yeah, I do want to keep a tradeoff between clockwork and steam rather than one being a lot better than the other, although the steam will need to be more powerful since it needs fuel.
I'm definitely more going for industrial than uncanny valley, the assassin could have an uncanny valley look perhaps though.
Steampunk robots? Read this webcomic for ideas. LOTS of robots and other awesome steampunk.
I'd be more into the idea of Modrons https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/70/23/5b/70235b4c29b33ce6ee9447013ac2e203.jpg Geometrical animated shapes with legs face and arms and sometimes wings
