Are there plans to upgrade the installer to install the latest version of drupal 7 or 8?

There isn't a stable Drupal 7 version of Aegir yet, The current script definitely allows you to build Drupal 7 sites within aegir though (we're mainly using it for Drupal 7 sites). As for Drupal 8 sites it depends when this comes to Aegir itself.
