This PR has a bit of a mixed bag of things, mostly revolving around some changes to the package.json file and upgrading to use the new 1.x version of the Polymer CLI.

@alexli01: Danya asked me to do a review of the "hybridization" of this component. I'm going to just do it as a series of pull requests if that's OK, and I'll try to add comments where it makes sense. Some of these changes will having nothing to do with the hybridization part, but might as well make them while I'm in here! :)
