WebP images using Blade #69

Presenter name: Dan Beeston Talk name: WebP in the Pool Talk length: 15 minutes Socials: @dnabeast Talk synopsis: We're all versed in using Jpeg images but there are smaller and better options available. Using them is easy but making sure users on old browsers can see them, and providing alt version for retina displays, adds complexity. Dan will discuss the current solutions to the problem as well as demonstrate his Laravel package that automates the process.

Thanks for the offer @dnabeast! I'll reach out when we have scheduled the next meetup to see if you're available

Hey @dnabeast, we've scheduled the next meetup for Tuesday Nov 30 at Neto's offices in The Valley. Would you be interested in presenting this talk there?

We're going to make this next meetup more focused on the social aspect, given that we should be good to host an in-person meetup. So we'll have some drinks and food and lightning talks. Hopefully we can include your talk if you're available. It should be a good night.

Sounds great. I'll be there.

This is my first time doing a code talk. Any advice on tech? Slideshow programs? Gotchas? etc?

Awesome, thanks!

The most foolproof way is doing slides that can be shared via a link (eg. google slides, slides.com) because even if we have technical difficulties connecting your computer to the projector, you can still present from another computer.

However, you can bring your own computer for a quick demo if you want. IMO demo's often go into too much detail and loose the attention of the audience, but done well they can be really great too.

It helps if you can share stories and experiences you've had as well, it makes your content more relatable.

Something I often fall victim to is assuming knowledge of the audience. We have a very wide variety of experience in BrisPHP, from students/grads to people with 30 years experience in PHP, from using vanilla PHP to many difference frameworks. So try give a quick overview everything before diving too deeply into it and make sure to explain any terms you use that might not be obvious to people without your experience.

Hope that helps!

Hey @dnabeast, just confirming the meetup is tomorrow night at the Neto offices in Fortitude Valley. Will you be presenting in person or online?

dnabeast commented 2 years ago

I'll be there in person. I'll log into my google account there and run the slideshow from one of your computers if that's okay.

Yep, that's cool. If you post a link to your slides here you won't even need to login.

I think this is right.
