While keeping Santa Cruz weird is a great goal, it would simplify understanding and contributing to the FLAIR if the package and install structure followed the pip guidelines.
For instance, development could be done with pip install in a virtual environment and not require setting PATH to find things in odd places.
This would also help train grad students on not making weird package structures.
