In order to learn about topics like material science, mathematics, physics, accelerated computation, there is no good substitute for starting where you are with what you have and just doing what you can. Throwing money at it is no solution -- you must learn how things are done the hard way, EXCEPT the hard way is a lot easier in the virtual realm of open source ... by looking at open source software and investigating the things we do not know.

In order to expedite our learning, we want to understand things about open source dev communities ... at some point, understanding involves participating and asking questions, but FIRST it is important to do incredible amounts of background reading and preparation to follow the actual arc of development as well as the written statement of vision, goals or roadmap of where things are intended to be going to ensure that our questions and contributions to the discussion have a chance of being relevant.
