cleaning up dataloader functions and imports #266

Hi @sebastian-nehrdich - I have made this as a separate PR as there are so many changes. This for cleaning up the new dataloader branch and removing functions that are not used and imports that are not used. I've done the dataloader only. Please check carefully!!!!

I'm making a new branch with this but it's fairly similar.
