GPS turns off during recording when mytracks loses focus #496

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Start My Tracks
2. Notice GPS icon
3a. Move to another application, or
3b. Wait for a Calendar Alarm to pop up

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expected that when My Tracks was not showing on screen, the GPS system would
continue to run (and that I would see proof of that with the GPS icon top of
screen). This is the behaviour I see with Google Navigate, as an example.
Instead, whenever My Tracks loses focus, the GPS turns off. As a result, tracks
are not recorded accurately.

What version of MyTracks are you using? 1.1.7

On what version of Android? 2.2

On what phone? HTC Desire

Logfile is attached.

I also have the same problem where the GPS icon disappears when My Tracks
looses focus. The Google Maps app does not do this. This never happened on my
Droid X on the Froyo (2.2) OS version, but always happens now after the
Gingerbread (2.3) OS update.

I also have almost the same problem. Today I was out for cycling. I pushed the
"record track" and locked the screen. After a half hour and 7 kms I unlocked
the screen and I got surprised. I saw these data:
Total Distance: 0.22
Total Time: around 00:30:00
So the time was accuracy but the distance was incorrect. And no drawing on the
map. I checked the gps signal with "GPS status" and it was acceptable. What is
the problem? I use this app for 1 month and I met this situation just today.
Thanks for your help! Awesome app!

Same problem here, the other day i went skating and half an hour after started
recording took a look and the map was blank...I left it recording the rest of
the route, stopped recording half an hour later, closed mytracks, opened again,
the last track remained blank on map...selected another one, selected this
track (in order to reload it)and it appeared on the map but only 2km from the
10km route i did...

Slightly different here:
I can switch to a different app just fine. But after having done that, I start
experiencing the GPS turning off when I turn the phone off - as I turn it back
on I notice it's looking for a lock, and I see it's missed a part of the track.
Later the GPS doesn't even turn back on anymore when I turn the screen on, and
I have to disable and enable GPS for it to start again.
After having done that about 4-5 times, I can't get it on anymore at all,
needing a reboot - and then it's fine again for a while. Does this look like
memory leakage?

Rode with Strava App today, and that seemed to work fine...

The recordig of my track cuts in and out. At the end of my ride, the recorded
path is a set of segments separated by gaps.

Here is a link to my public map that shows the fragmented ride.

When I ride with Strava, I get one continuous path.

Discovered a clue.
If I run Mytracks and Strava at the same time, then MyTracks works. It does not
lose focus. The track is countinuous.
I hope that lights a bulb for someone.

I think I may have the same issue, started MyTracks (with a good GPS fix)
before a run, locked the screen and put it in my armband. I didn't look at it
until I got back home, when I unlocked the phone and stopped recording. My
track only showed my the beginning and end of the run, with a brief segment
(maybe 200m) about halfway through my run.

Similar problems experienced. When running just MyTracks my "map" tab shows a
broken track, i.e. it shows numerous partial segments of my true journey and my
total distance is completely inaccurate (1.9 miles when my cycle computer shows
24 miles).

If I run Strava and MyTracks then all is ok.

A real shame as I've enjoyed using MyTracks for years and it is now too
unreliable to use.

MyTracks = v2.0.2

Same issue here; MyTracks showed the the correct time but only 200m distance in
three segments of a 7km run. I was so excited to be able to use Tasker to turn
MyTracks on and off and to finally have Pause, and now this. Please fix! In the
meantime I'm going to have to roll back to the last version.

Maybe this will help people: I only had the problem in "Optimize for battery"
mode of GPS sampling. I set it back to "recommended" and have yet to reproduce
the problem again.

I'm having similar problems with My Tracks on my Jelly Bean equipped Motorola
HD Maxx. It records partial tracks and seems to lose GPS - often while under
clear sky (e.g. out in the bay).

Other GPS devices (e.g. old Garmin Forerunner 201, old DROID-X) do NOT have
this problem. And yes, I've already rebooted and factory reset the phone. I
also set the MyTracks app "GPS Accuracy" to 3.1 mi (poor GPS). Still no
consistent joy.

Annoyingly enough, it doesn't ALWAYS fail, and ironically, Google Maps and
Navigation don't lose GPS - only MyTracks. A couple of times, it tracked a
whole, 62 mile car commute, even when in the trees. On another car trip, I
noticed the phone's GPS icon blinking to tell me that MyTracks had lost
connectivity. I turned GPS off and back on, and it then worked for the rest of
the trip. However, I should not have to babysit the app. Again, other GPS
devices do not lose the connection.

MyTracks: v.2.0.3; Android: 4.1.1; Phone: Verizon Motorola RAZR MAXX HD.

Hints? Suggestions? Fixes?

Thanks

On my Alcatel 991D (android 2.3) it stopped to register (GPS turned off) when I
locked the screen.
This app was useless to me.

We found the bug that is causing this. Basically we have a thread that monitors
the gps connection. The thread would periodically disable/enable gps. We
changed the way we monitor gps connection in My Tracks version 2.0.5, which
will be out in a few weeks.

Thanks again to everyone when reported this issue.

Howdy-

Any target date for the release of My Tracks 2.0.5? I'm still dropping
satellites (and boy, do they hurt, and make a loud noise when they hit the
ground)!

Ironically, my most recent event was during a surfski padding workout in
Newport Beach, CA, last Friday. I lost GPS connectivity right next to your
giant catamaran, moored in the back bay near Lido Island! Coincidence? I
think not!

Thanks in advance...

I have the same issue at #36. My tracks worked fine with 2.0.2 but 2.0.5 drops
the GPS intermittently and then I get a bunch of straight lines on my ride and
top speeds on my bike of 65 MPH.

I just upgraded to v2.0.5 and can confirm that this bug is *not* fixed. It
still drops GPS intermittently, just as v2.0.4 did.

My tracks stopped dropping GPS when I left airplane mode off. I used 2.0.2 in
airplane mode so I could get 8 hours of battery with My Tracks as many of my
rides have no cell phone service. With 2.0.5 my battery died after 3.5 hours
and I lost 22 miles of my last ride. I since turned off Google GPS Service and
am using standalone GPS and battery life has improved. I still prefer to use
My Tracks in Airplane mode though.

In the middle of a hike I get the message "Waiting for GPS signal" and the app
locks up. The app GPS test says that the accuracy is 10 ft, so My Tracks should
not be having a problem. If I close My Tracks and restart- no problem. I am
using My Tracks 2.0.5 on a Samsung Galaxy 3 with Android version 4.3.

Is it possible to get technical details about the fix? Osmand, Geotag Photos,

v2.0.10 has the problem on my Motorola Droid Maxx running Android 4.4.4 - in
fact, sometimes, it won't even work for an entire hour! I turn off wifi because
often times when i am near a house with strong wifi, it interrupts my apps and
streaming music. I should NOT need wifi on when out and about on cell data -
let's get real if you are expecting wifi like Ingress does!!! Totally stupid,
and you should look into how you might be leveraging some libs that are
wifi-centric, etc.

PLEASE FIX - this is soooo annoying!!!
