Might need something like a "story mode" and a "combat mode", or more generally a "turn-based mode"
This mimics D&D where you role play as an unstructured back-and-forth out of combat, but then "role for initiative" and "enter turn-based mode" for combat or other highly-tactical encounters.
For the first story, use the standard story mode and just adjust the encounters to be 1-3 turns maximum.
Then revisit this.
It feels weird to play multiple rounds of combat in the "What do you do next?" mechanic, especially if there are many possible actions a user can take.
It's also unsatisfying to resolve the complete combat in one user choice, especially if it goes poorly. Readers will want to play out each step.
