discrepancies in transpiration, evaporation and runoff #95

Ideally, this can be in separate tickets; but as these changes are related, they need to be done in sequence. Main problem is low transpiration rate, high soil evaporation and low runoff in single site and global offline investigations. Proposed solution as listed in the attachments include: 1) Transpiration rate: a)Water extraction should also depend on water availability, in addition to the dependency on root fractions. This will redistribute some of the water demand to deeper layers. b) Remove the fudging factor to stop the artificial reduction of water supply. c) Fix a bug in the subroutine for using Lai & Ktaul method d) Fix a bug in the character length of cable_user%FWSOIL_SWITCH 2) Soil evaporation and runoff: Eva has an existing fix in https://trac.nci.org.au/trac/cable/browser/branches/Users/ewk599/CABLE-2.1.2_N/ However, this fix may need to be recalibrated after the improvements in transpiration rate has been implemented.

Ians response:

I haven’t had a look at the details here – but a lot of this excess transpiration/soil moisture/lack of conservation was covered/sorted out by Vanessa with the ‘Haverd2013’ work around fwsoil_switch.

So yes – we may need to look at this again but we would need to start afresh to check that it hasn’t been addressed already.
