Installing basemap==1.3.6 on macos required the following install procedure: https://github.com/matplotlib/basemap/issues/583
basemap==1.3.6
with python==3.9
python==3.9
i.e. brew install geos. This does not seem to be an issue with more recent versions of basemap i.e. 1.4.1. As this seemed to install previously without issue.
brew install geos
basemap
