Cover images from source other than Syndetic Solutions #282

IIT - Is it possible to add cover images to our records in VuFind without a subscription to Syndetics Solutions? In looking over VuFind documentation https://vufind.org/wiki/configuration:external_content, it seems that covers can be imported from a variety of other sources; however the CARLI website only mentions Synditics Solutions as an option.

Follow-up: I think that Google Books would be our first choice- that said we don't have a strong preference as to where the images are coming from as long as they are free (which I think is the case for Google Books, Open Library, Amazon, and Library Thing). From what I understand, it could be set up to use a preferential order, i.e. check Google Books first, if Google doesn't have it check Amazon, etc.

"Book Covers - Currently resources that have an ISBN number will have a cover image displayed along with it. The cover image can come from a number of places such as Amazon.com, Syndetic Solutions, OpenLibrary, LibraryThing, Google Book Search, or your own collection of images. The decision as to which to use can be made by you, the implementor, by editing the VuFind configuration file."

Related to this, can a local source be added in addition to Syndetics? The logic would be

if ISBN match in Syntedits, then use Syndetics if no ISBN match in Syndetics, check local image collection

I'm asking because EIU has a big collection of 3D objects that would greatly benefit from a cover image but are not in Syndetics.

EIU - RT 99872 Our Teachers Center librarian would like to have cover images available for kits and other unusual items in her collection.

Looking at the VuFind documentation, it appears to be possible to set a secondary source for cover images in config.ini. Is this a customization that the 4.1 team is willing to try? The cover image section in the config.ini file starts at line 621 in the CARLI version. The localFile option seems to be gone in the CARLI version of config.ini, but I thought it would be worth asking. To clarify, we are looking to add local files in addition to Syndetics, not to replace Syndetics.

Discussed at 11/29/2018 meeting: more research is needed on which other sources offer curated image sets. We do not want to link to uncurated images that may be incorrect and potentially problematic.
