workspace support - snapshot #2254

2084 provided the support of workspace saving and restoring with limited features.

This issue is to complete the full support, including:

[ ] image viewer state, AST layout, multi-panel grid layout, etc
[ ] GUI layout
[ ] region analytics

GUI layout in particular makes me very nervous when it comes to shared workspaces. I think we need to make all our widgets "responsive" in order to cope with this feature.
