(Regarding copyright the first episode that was used is already released publicly on youtube and is on the Internet Archive too: https://archive.org/details/youtube-u1pc6teZGnw - it's not even one of the good ones because Hexadecimal isn't in it :) )

I was using MakeMKV before this, I noticed under title_t01.mkv, for Subtitles it was saying this: CC→Text English ( Lossy conversion )
I searched that sentence with quotes (for exact phrase) on duckduckgo and found a thread on the 2mkv site saying CCextractor is what MakeMKV uses to rip closed captions, and also: "It converts it to SRT and thus loses the data that determines where it is positioned on the screen."
I then searched for "raw subtitles positioning" to try find out how to keep the positioning data from Closed Captions, and found "How to position a subtitle in a .srt file ? - VideoHelp Forum" which says: "If you want it in the subtitle file you must use another format like ssa/ass" " You can add the value {\an} before the text line The "n" set the number as:
n = 1 --> bottom left n = 2 --> bottom center n = 3 --> bottom right
n = 4 --> Up left n = 6 --> Up center n = 7 --> Up right
n = 9 --> center left n = 10 --> center center n = 11 --> center right
For instance: {\a4}Example Text --> Shows "Example Text" at Upper left {\a9}Example Text --> Shows "Example Text" at center left " works in SRT files with MPC-HC but not VLC player apparently
Following on from that, I used CCExtractor's home page "Extracting closed captions from a DVD step by step tutorial", using DVDDecrypter to get all the IFO, BUP and VOB files out of the DVD, and after changing CCextractor's Output option to ASS I got what looks like a clean rip of the subtitles, but only one file named this for the first episode: VTS_01_0.ass (in the input I had put in every IFO, BUP and VOB from the DVD)
When I looked in the Execute log I found this and it says to report it here:
