Might look at this too: https://github.com/sfeakes/aqualinkd It's more like your first note being a RS485 node.

I'm starting down this same road having just put in a RS and a new pump. I'm kinda thinking I might like the 485 style control just because the other one is just like a Spa Side Remote, which is missing a lot of functionality.
