Maintenance updates #440

Adds a few maintenance fixes.

I think I got a similar problem later when just getting a subset of a regular .nc file

@jypeter We'll get these updates pushed out, see if they help fix the issue you're running into. We're no longer actively developing CDAT/cdms2, these efforts have been moved to xcdat. There will only be maintenance updates for CDAT components to keep them working with current libraries and no bug fixes or new features.
