Set edge pattern using a variable #156

It is great that you allow different edge patterns, but one useful extension could be to set the edge pattern based on a variable, similar to the option to color by a variable, or set node shape by a variable.

We talked about doing this at some point, but we couldn't think of a way to make patterns that were distinctive enough that you could distinguish them at a glance (the way you can with colors). I'll bring this up at our next meeting to see if anyone's had any flashes of insight about this functionality.
