Switch Berkeley Law Library DOIs from DataCite to Crossref #246

Open mariagould opened 1 year ago

Berkeley Law Library currently uses DataCite DOIs for their law school journal publications. They would like to switch to using Crossref. This change would involve converting existing DOIs from DataCite to Crossref, and then registering all new DOIs with Crossref after the switch. Their DOI prefix and existing DOIs would remain the same.

This is a complex and multi-phase project. Documenting a proposed approach here:

Phase 0: Pre-work

Phase 1: Testing and validation

Phase 2: Transfer prep

Phase 3: Enact prefix transfer

Phase 4: Re-register existing DOIs

Phase 5: Implement new workflow for new DOIs

Background information from Crossref and DataCite:

From Crossref:

Assuming that the prefix under which your library has been registering DOIs with DataCite is unique to the library in question, it should be possible to transfer the prefix from DataCite to Crossref, subject to DataCite's approval.

You are correct in that all existing DOIs registered with DataCite under this prefix would need to be re-registered with Crossref in order to bring their metadata into our schema. We don't charge for the re-registration of existing DOIs with us, so we'll calculate and apply a credit to the appropriate account based on the number, type and publication date of the re-registered DOIs. (There are different fees for different content types, and different fees depending on whether the content is current or backfile).

All this means that the library will need to:

Make sure they have all the information they need from their old RA - for example, they may be able to get their old XML to use for reference. Re-register their existing DOIs with Crossref and let us know when this is done. To credit the relevant account, we'll need to know how many DOIs of each content type (e.g. journal articles, conference proceedings, datasets) have been re-registered and, for each type, what number are current (items published in 2022, 2021 or 2020) and what number are backfile (items published in 2019 or earlier).

With thanks for your patience, I can confirm that DataCite have now approved the transfer of DOI prefix 10.15779 to Crossref. The next step will be for you to confirm the number and type of existing DataCite DOIs under this prefix that are to be re-registered with Crossref, and for you to confirm the point at which the prefix transfer itself should take place.
