Mapping medication units #61

Question: We have unit values in our medication administrations that are not part of the value set listed in the Value Set Appendix. What should we do?

The value set for Units in CDM v4.0 is based on UCUM. The universe of UCUM codes is essentially unbounded (http://unitsofmeasure.org/ucum.html#datyp2apdxatblxmp), so we have to have a finite list in order to test model conformance, unless we change the field type to text. The value set used in CDM v4.0 is based on the common UCUM units as identified by LOINC (https://loinc.org/usage/units/). Unit values that fall outside of this set should be mapped to OT with the source value placed in the RAW field. This is true even if it is possible to represent the unit with a "valid" UCUM code. We will consider revising this value set in the future based on the data that exist across the network.
