CEDStandards / CEDS-Elements

The Common Education Data Standards (CEDS) are an education data management initiative whose purpose is to streamline the understanding of data within and across P-20W institutions and sectors. CEDS includes a common vocabulary complete with standard elements names, definitions, and option sets. This repository contains all the CEDS elements, definitions, option sets and their definitions, and entities and definitions. Its purpose is to expand that vocabulary to meet the needs of every education stakeholder. The expanded vocabulary is then added to the CEDS Integration Data Store and CEDS Data Warehouse – the other two repositories located here.

This is for capturing needs not currently supported by the CEDS model. Please do not send or share actual data as examples in this issue or in attachments.

Author(s) Deborah Donovan Authoring Organization(s) Mississippi Department of Education Email address ddonovan@mdek12.org Use Case Title Request for JSON and XML schemas for CEDS API to directly ingest data in CEDS format

Use Case Description As part of a system modernization in our state, MDE is developing CEDS JSON and XML schemas to ingest data via API from LEAs. We believe that these schemas will benefit any other state or organization that may be looking to ingest data into the CEDS IDS or a CEDS based data store. Therefore, we would like to work collaboratively with other interested organizations to develop schemas as an artifact of the reference model for community use.

Use Case Background MDE is building a new statewide student information system based on CEDS. The data ingestion from LEAs will be based on the CEDS data model, using the CEDS IDS as the reference architecture. MDE plans to collect data via API from LEAs. Since MDE is moving from its current custom, non-standard data collection to a CEDS based collection, a new data ingestion method is required. Our vision is to have as few data transformations as possible and for transformations to take place as close to the source system as possible. Efforts to build CEDS JSON and XML schemas to receive data in the in new system are currently underway.

This use case fully aligns with South Carolina's development path. Our hope is to connect a Statewide Ed-Fi ODS to the CEDS IDS using an API. Athena software has demonstrated a prototype model for the JSON structure. Development of the supporting tech stack would be greatly enhance our work.

This use case is essential to Michigan's development path as well. This schema will give us the ability to move the data directly to Document Database storage without additional conversions. It will also enable us to publish REST APIs leveraging the Azure framework. This schema is a focus of a current project we have underway to bring certification and employment data together. Development of this is essential to our success.
