Problems with land cover map in geo_em.d01.nc based on LANDMATE_PFT #4

Land cover map based on LANDMATE_PFT in geo_em.d01_EUR-11_newLAI_LANDMATE_final.nc (1) is too grainy, which may cause crashes due to possible steep gradients, (2) some coastal points are categorized as lake, and should be sea, and (3) the LANDMASK variable is not updated according to the new land cover data, which may cause additional issues in the model run. image

The land cover map is updated using the conservative interpolation of the raw LANDMATE_PFT data and the higher resolution map of the water surfaces: image

and the LANDMASK variable is updated to correspond to water and land grids from the land cover map: image

The URL in the main README file and in the static_data folder still point to the geo_em.d01_EUR-11_newLAI_LANDMATE_final.nc file. During the meeting on Dec 1st, 2023, we decided to use the updated version from the last entry in this issue. @yoselita please update the links of the main branch. We might keep older versions if some sensitivity tests were carried out with these older files. We could use some sequential naming (geo_em.d01.EUR-12-v1.nc, etc.) instead of the new, final, updated, ... wording and just clarify how they differ in a table.

The latest version to use including this new interpolation is geo_em.d01.EUR-12-v3.nc and has been properly linked to the main README in c902f5a Also mentioned via email and during the meeting on Dec 14th, 2023.
